Oct 2008 Article

Hi, my name is Karin Carnine and Mary has asked that I share a little bit about myself. I’m 42 years old and have been married to Matt for 12 years. We have two daughters, Ingrid, age 10, and Carolyn, age 7. I stay at home and homeschool both of them. We all live in very sunny Tucson, Arizona but I am originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

I first started crafting when I was about 13. My best friend, Cheryl, taught me how to crochet. She only taught me the very basics and over time I learned more through a book. The very first thing I made (and never finished) was a blanket. I didn’t know about making turning chains at the ends of the rows so my blanket looked pretty weird! The sides would start to come in because I was missing chains and after a few rows I would notice it was getting narrower. So I would make some extra chains at the next row to bring the blanket back out. I wish I had kept that blanket so that people that say they could never learn to crochet could see it.

Most everything I made were gifts for my family. But I never made anything for charity. I worked so hard on things that there was no way that I was going to just give something away to someone I didn’t know. God had to really do a work in my heart. It took until I was about 24 for God to bring me full circle. I was working as a nurse in a physical rehab hospital. Every patient was given a lap robe and a wheelchair bag. I enjoyed seeing the blankets and eventually decided that I would like to make them to. Its funny that I was so resistant to giving my crocheted items away, and then I went to the opposite extreme. I couldn’t wait to give my stuff away. It was so much fun to do that.

It wasn’t until later that I thought things through. I believe that God puts things in us. He put the love of crocheting in me. And, He doesn’t just put that in us for us to keep it to ourselves. He wants us to share His Love. There’s nothing wrong with making things for ourselves or selling things that we make. But I believe He wants us to use our crafting to reach out to those who are hurting or who are lost. My crocheting is a gift from God to me that He wants me to give to the world.

I really can’t remember how I found HAIN. When I first joined I could not figure out how to post in the craft forum. I think Satan was trying to confuse my mind so that I could not have fellowship with you all. The forum has been so wonderful to me. I love getting to know you all and to see the pictures of the things you make. The way that people come together to support and encourage each other is so wonderful.

Well, I hope you all have enjoyed getting to know me. And I can’t wait to hear about someone else.

Karin
