Testimony for Cheryl Chow

I am 40 years old, mother of 3 girls and married for 10 years. This is my story of becoming a Christian about 6 years ago. It is also a story of my oldest daughter who is an angel in heaven but who, ultimately, brought me to God.

Growing up I had only attended a church once. My parents decided one Christmas that it would be good to go to church for Christmas Eve service. We went and never went back to a church again. The only other times I had been to a church was for a couple of family weddings and the funeral of my Grandfather. I didn’t know that Jesus existed. I always believed there was a God but didn’t know anything about Him.

When I was 28 years old I met my husband. We had a daughter named Brianna about a year after we met. She was beautiful and we were a happy family. When she was 5 1/2months old she suffocated in a portable crib while we were visiting my parents. We were in shock as were my parents and the rest of our families and friends.

About 3 days after her death I had such an urge to buy a bible. I think God had needed my heart to be completely broken apart in order to reach me. He needed to bring to the bottom of a pit before I would even consider reaching out to Him. I went to a Christian Book Store with my husband and we looked for a bible. We couldn’t find one in the store so eventually we asked the lady behind the counter. They were all kept behind the counter so she asked which kind we wanted … Now not knowing anything at all about bibles I didn’t even know that there was more than one “kind”. She was very understanding and helped us pick one out.

Each night before I went to sleep I read that bible. Starting at Genesis I read through the whole thing. I didn’t understand most of it, but it brought me comfort. We still were not attending a church. We went to one but felt so out of place and unwelcomed that we never went back.

My husband then had an opportunity to move from Canada to the US for his job. We moved after my second daughter, Natalie was born. A friend at his work kept encouraging us to attend their church. I was very excited and wanted to go but my husband wasn’t sure. Eventually we did attend and both of us became Christians about 6 months after first attending. I now know about Jesus and the wonderful gift he gave us both by his death on the cross and our beautiful daughter Brianna, who opened my heart to His word.

My parents have also become Christians through both mine and my husbands testimonies and the changes they have seen in our lives.

Recently God has lead me on a path towards charity work. He has given me a group of ladies that meet at our church and make quilts for a local low income preschool. What a blessing they have been to me, standing beside me through all the ups and downs and sharing in the blessings of giving to others. As well, the internet has provided a vast resource of patterns and forums for helping others both in the US and worldwide. I am so thankful to live in such an age of technology that I can touch the lives of people I have never met (and probably will never meet). I look forward to what the Good Lord has in store for me in the weeks and months ahead.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. Colossians 3:23-24
