As some of you may know the Children's Division has been around for quite some time. Focusing on a different area of HAIN, but still helping families and children in need.
For awhile now this area of HAIN has set stagnate. I am hoping with a new year around the corner that I can bring some focus back to this area. I have been brainstorming things to see what we can do to get this division active again. I would love to hear from other volunteers on this as well. We have pretty much kept the same drives for this division (Baby Shower, Support Bags, School Supplies, and the Winter Warm Up) I am looking into adding 1-2 more things to this to help cover the months that we don't have anything planned. Just a few questions below, if you could take a moment and share your thoughts it would be appreciated.

For the current drives we do for this division, do you have places in your area that you can donate to, to help save on shipping?
I'm not sure how many of you follow HAIN on facebook, but would creating an event on there also be helpful to you?
Do you have homeless shelters, women's shelters in your area?
Would doing a break down of items appeal more to you? Examples: Collecting certain items per week, like pencils one week, paper the next etc.

My hope is that things will pick up in this area next year. I know for some it can be overwhelming to try and help multiple areas of HAIN, but I am just trying to get this area to appeal to everyone. We have had some interested in helping but they are not crafty so this division would be perfect for that. People are still able to contribute even if they cannot knit, crochet or sew. Any questions or comments are welcome. You can ask them here or message me. I am REALLY looking forward to getting this area active once again, and with some ideas in mind I hope it helps, but it will take a group effort to make this possible.

Just wanted to drop a quick note that this is the final week for donating school supplies to children in need. Volunteers are encouraged to donate locally to save on shipping costs. If you do not have anywhere to donate items you are welcome to message me (Diana) and I will help you. Most requested items are pencils, paper, pens, folders, rulers, markers, colored pencils and crayons. Thanks so much to those that have already helped with this. :)

We are now about a month in to our annual school supply drive. We are still collecting items through the end of September.
This is a great opportunity for those that are not crafty to reach out to children in need, by helping provide them with school supplies they need. It is unfortunate that so many families are struggling right now. Hosting this school supply drive is just one of the many ways that HAIN reaches out to families. Some may think "it's just school supplies", but even helping with something small like this can greatly reduce the burden and pinch that a family may be experiencing. I'm not sure about other areas, but I know here in Indiana you can easily drop $100 on supplies for the whole year and that is just for ONE child. Then we also have to pay a book rental fee each year. It can definitely be costly, and that is where you come in. By picking up some notebooks, pencils, erasers, or folders, you are helping a child have a brighter start for the school year. Please consider helping us out in this area. We have normally done pretty well with this, but donations are down this year.  If you have any questions you are always welcome to message Mary or myself (Diana).

You are welcome to donate to a school in your area or contact Mary or Diana for information on where you can send your items. Please help us make this a successful year for the children.

HAIN Baby Shower

As most of you know once a year we host a baby shower that will benefit area crisis pregnancy centers. These type of centers can be a great blessing to a new or struggling mother. They often provide services to assist moms in getting on their feet by offering multiple resources, support, and even prenatal care. Most of these centers are non-profit so there is never a fee charged for services they provide. Which is where volunteers like us come in. By donating items that are used on a daily or weekly basis at these centers we help them continue to provide the care and support that mothers and children need.

We have already received some donations, and we are still collecting items for this until the end of March. We encourage everyone that wants to help make a difference to check your local area for crisis pregnancy centers to donate items to. If you wish to help but do not have one in your area you can contact Mary or Diana here on the forum for information on where you can send items to.

Most requested items:

  • Diapers and wipes
  • Hygiene items for baby
  • New or gently used clothing up to 4T
  • Blankets
  • Toys
  • And anything else that you would buy for a baby shower.

~Be the change you wish to see.

Winter Warmup Drive.

With the cooler weather just around the corner the Childrens Division is hosting its annual warmup drive. If this is the first time that you have heard of the warm up drive, we accept handmade and store bought items. The most requested items are: gloves, mittens, scarves and hats. These items are being collected for preschool children up to 5th grade. You can send items to me or if you wish to donate locally you can check with schools or shelters in your area to see if they have children that are in need of these items.

This drive is a great way for those that are not very crafty to participate. I don't mean to sound like a broken record but donations have been down for the Childrens Division so hopefully with this drive we can begin to breathe life into this division once again. Sometimes it gets overlooked, but this division is also an important one. So we are hoping to see some good results this year. :)

Don't forget that if you participate please share pictures and updates with us on the forum.

I was out at the stores over the weekend and seen that some already have great deals on items, so for anyone planning to donate supplies this would be a great time to buy. Stores like Walmart, Staples, and Target already have good deals going on. We will be collecting items until the end of August.

Volunteers are encouraged to donate locally to save on shipping, if no schools in your area are in need of extra supplies and you dont mind shipping costs you are welcome to send items to Diana Richie for donation. If you have any questions you are always welcome to message me, email or you can comment in this blog post. We have done pretty well in the past with this drive, so hopefully we can have the same success this year.
